Pastor's Ponderings #139 2/22/12
Here’s a great comment on Biblical love by Wayne Grudem, as quoted by Ray Ortlund in his Tabletalk article entitled “Love’s Shroud:”
Pastor's Ponderings #138 2/21/12
As we continue to celebrate Biblical love this month, here are some more words from Dr. John R. Sittema in his article “Enduring Love” in this month’s Tabletalk:
Pastor's Ponderings #137 2/20/12
Since we are still in the “love month,” let’s ponder the concept of Biblical love some more.
Pastor's Ponderings #133 2/15/12
In honor of “Valentine’s Week,” we continue to ponder the six commitments that I mentioned in last Sunday’s message. These come from Paul David Tripp’s book What Did You Expect? Redeeming the Realities of Marriage. These are the kind of actions we will be taking if we consider our marriage precious to us, and if we want to honor God by honoring the institution of marriage that He has given us. Here’s commitment number four:
4. We will commit to building a relationship of love.

Here’s another pondering from Paul David Tripp in September’s Tabletalk magazine. This is in response to a question about how a Christian changes for God’s glory, or the process of sanctification:
Pastor's Ponderings #128 2/7/12
Here’s another pondering from Paul David Tripp in September’s Tabletalk magazine. This is in response to the question, “What are the biggest challenges facing Christian adolescents today?”
Pastor's Ponderings #127 2/6/12
For those of us planning to attend our marriage Retreat this weekend, I want to prepare us by giving you some ponderings form Paul David Tripp, who will be our teacher this weekend (via DVD). In September, he was interviewed by Tabletalk magazine. Today’s quote, and some more to follow, come from that interview:

Here is a good "Scotty Smith prayer" to help prepare us for worship with our church family this Sunday:
Pastor's Ponderings #125 2/2/12
We continue with our January “Book of the Month” for another pondering. In chapter 5 of Gospel-powered Humility, William Farley says this about the sinfulness of sin:
Pastor's Ponderings #123 1/31/12
Before returning to our January “Book of the Month” for some more ponderings, I wanted to share with you one more quote from D. A. Carson as he comments on Haman’s lust for power that we see in Esther 5:
Pastor's Ponderings #122 1/28/12
On this day before we gather to worship as a church family, let’s step away from our ponderings in Farley’s book on humility. We will return to that at the beginning of next week.
Pastor's Ponderings #119 1/25/12
Here is my next excerpt from the “Book of the Month” for January, Gospel-Powered Humility by William P. Farley. At the beginning of the book, Farley quotes William Law in his book A Devout Call, written in the 1700’s:

For the next few days, I’d like to offer some excerpts from the “Book of the Month” for January, Gospel-Powered Humility by William P. Farley. Here’s the first one:
To follow up on Jeff’s two week series on prayer (for which I am still thanking God), here is how John Calvin defines prayer:
Prayer is “a communion of men with God by which, having entered the heavenly sanctuary, they appeal to Him in person concerning His promises in order to experience…that what they believed was not in vain.” Elsewhere, Calvin writes that prayer is “a communication between God and us whereby we expound to Him our desires, our joys, our sighs, in a word, all the thoughts of our hearts.”
Continuing with the theme of prayer, motivated by Brother Jeff’s sermons, here is a scriptural prayer of thanksgiving from http://www.matthewhenry.org/:
Pastor's Ponderings #110 1/13/12
We are studying through the book of Mark at Solid Rock. Here is a quote for your pondering that we were confronted with last Wednesday night:
“If the gospel of Jesus Christ isn’t the best news you have ever heard, then you haven’t understood the gospel.” - Rico Tice
Pastor's Ponderings #109 1/12/12
Here’s a good change of pace from John Piper’s blog for you to roll over in your brain. Happy pondering!
What should you do if you know someone who seems to be more excited about movies than Jesus?
Pastor's Ponderings #108 1/11/12
We come to the completion of our pondering of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ article, “Profiting from the Scriptures.” All of these exhortations are intended to complement “Encouraging Word # 4” that I spoke of in my New Year’s Day message. That word was “reception” – an eager readiness by the people of God to receive His Word on a consistent basis.
Pastor's Ponderings #103 1/4/12 We “press on” mentally with D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ article, “Profiting from the Scriptures.” As I’ve already said, these exhortations go hand-in-hand with “Encouraging Word # 4” that I offered up in my New Year’s Day message. That word was “reception” – an eager readiness by the people of God to receive His Word on a consistent basis. Here is Dr.
Pastor's Ponderings #100 12/29/11
In 2 Chronicles 34, we read of King Josiah’s rediscovery of the book of the Law (probably Deuteronomy). When the words are read to him, he tears his robe, an action signifying brokenness and repentance. The fruit of Josiah’s repentance is that he orders reform and celebrates the Passover (chapter 35).
Pastor's Ponderings #99 Christmas Eve, 2011
The shopping is done. The gifts are wrapped and resting peacefully under the tree. The furniture has been rearranged to accommodate six adults and six grandchildren at our annual family Christmas gift exchange tomorrow. Amy is sewing bells on the toes of six little stockings (a new addition to our celebration). And I’m half-watching “A Christmas Story” for the millionth time while I am writing these words.
Pastor's Ponderings #98 12/15/11 When you hear the word “fellowship” what thoughts come to your mind? I’d like to quote Dennis Johnson again from the same article I quoted yesterday: “If ‘fellowship’ brings to your mind’s eye images of light conversation over hot coffee in a ‘fellowship hall’ during a ‘fellowship hour,’ we will misunderstand what Luke and the Holy Spirit mean by ‘fellowship.’ The Greek term … is ‘koinonia.’ Its focus is on a shared li

Here’s a great, short, “to the point” quote from Steve Timmis and Tim Chester in Gospel-centered Life:
“The sign of a true gospel community is not a community without conflict (whose message is ‘we’re nice people’), but a community that forgives (whose message is ‘God is gracious’).
What is the message of RCC?
Pastor's Ponderings #95 11/29/11
Let’s ponder our service at RCC in our efforts to please God and serve one another, considering others more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:3) and striving to excel in building up the church (1 Corinthians 14:12). In their great little book, Gospel-centered Life, Steve Timmis and Tim Chester write this:

Here's a great prayer from Scotty Smith to start our Thanksgiving week. I pray your Thanksgiving will be abundantly blessed!
Pastor's Ponderings #92 11/18/11
Amy and I had such a joyful time last night at the Thanksgiving dinner with our church family! What a blessing it was to be with everyone around the tables of fellowship. I thank God for my church family! What a gift of God’s amazing grace!
Pastor's Ponderings #89 11/3/11
How much time do you spend on Facebook and YouTube? What about your kids? Consider these thoughts from Alex Chediak in his article “Coming of Age in the Facebook Age” (Modern Reformation, July/August 2011):
Pastor's Ponderings #90 11/8/11
After a two-week break from our study of Romans, we will dive back into the nitty-gritty theology of chapter nine this week. Here is where we will pick up:
Pastor's Ponderings #91 11/9/11
Well, Amy & I set a record this year! Believe it or not, our Christmas tree is up!! Two weeks before Thanksgiving!!! There are no ornaments on it yet, but our tree is standing next to the fireplace in all its pre-lit glory! I can hardly believe it!

A Gospel Prayer for Reformation Sunday Posted: 30 Oct 2011 03:46 AM PDT But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
Pastor's Ponderings #85 10/18/11 Today’s reading in Tabletalk magazine contains these comments regarding Philippians 1:25-26: “In saving us from sin and death, and His holy wrath, our God has placed us in a community that, according to His sovereign determination, needs our gifts and talents. To refuse to serve the body of Christ is tantamount to refusing to serve Christ Himself, and we always want to be good and faithful servant
Pastor's Ponderings #84 10/13/11 Have you ever been in a discussion, and knew what you wanted to say, but were struggling to say it in the right way? And then, not long after your discussion, in your personal reading you come across something that expresses pretty much what you were trying to say? That happened to me not long ago. After a discussion about the concept of “facts vs.
Pastor's Ponderings #83 10/12/11 In this month’s issue of Tabletalk (we still have issues available on the table in the foyer of the church) there is an excellent little article by Robert Rayburn entitled “Nothing Like the Church.” I encourage you to grab a copy of the magazine and read that article. Here is an excerpt: “We must remember that there is but one institution in this world that will also exist in the world to come. It is not one’s c
Pastor's Ponderings #82 10/3/11 To prepare for this pondering, please read Galatians 4:8-20 and note the apostle Paul’s struggle with the church folks in Galatia, many of whom seem to be deserting the truth of the gospel for the legalistic claims of the false teachers who have infiltrated their ranks. D. A.
Pastor's Ponderings #81 9/29/11 Our friend Chad Matthews shared this with me recently, and I thought I would pass it on for you to chew on. Dr. James White has some pretty honest reasons why, if you are shopping for a local Christian fellowship, you may want to dismiss a Reformed Baptist Church.
Pastor's Ponderings #80 9/27/11 Here’s a quote on prayer from Jonathan Edwards: “If we look through the whole Bible and observe all the examples of prayer that we find there recorded, we shall not find so many prayers for any other mercy as for the deliverance, restoration, and prosperity of the church and the advancement of God’s glory and kingdom of grace in the world.” What makes up the bulk of our prayers?
Pastor's Ponderings #79 9/26/11 What a wonderful Lord’s Day we had together on “Covenant Sunday.” From our corporate worship in the morning, to the baptism of Janice, to watching all of our precious children have fun, to our meal together, to our singing to the Lord, and then ending the day with some encouraging testimonies, it was a day for which I am still thanking God. I believe we experienced true fellowship! I love my church family!

Pastor's Ponderings #67 8/12/11
We have begun to consider how we will finish our lives, not in a specific way, but with what mind-set. Yesterday we began a list of suggestions from Jim Eliff in his article, “Preparing to Be an Amazing Old Man or Woman.” Here is his second suggestion for preparing for our final years:

Pastor's Ponderings #65 8/11/11
Ever since I retired from teaching last year, a thought that continues to hang around in the halls of my brain is: “Will I finish well?” As I head into the fourth quarter of life, will I waste it? Or will I live it to the fullest, for God’s glory and the good of His people?

What are you resting in today – your performance for God or the gospel of God? To help us ponder that, here is some insight from Michael Horton in the March/April edition of Modern Reformation magazine:

Pastor's Ponderings #60 7/18/11 In the closing pages of his book Think, John Piper makes this plea to the reader: “I am pleading that in all your thinking you seek to see and savor the Treasure. If thinking has the reputation of being only emotionaless logic, all will be in vain. God did not give us minds as ends in themselves. The mind provides the kindling for the fires of the heart. Pastor's Ponderings #56 7/8/11
Here is a provocative insight from Michael Horton in The Gospel Commission:
“I am more at home in the racially, generationally, socially, and politically mixed church in which I am a minister that I am at a family reunion. Yet that can only happen because the blood of Christ is thicker than that of kith and kin. We share one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”
Pastor's Ponderings #55 7/5/11
In Deuteronomy 31:19, God gives Moses these instructions:
“Now therefore write this song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the people of Israel.”

For the last few days I have been pondering and reflecting on our time with our young people at the D3 Summer Youth Conference at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Amy and I had a great time with our “Solid Rockers” and we are thankful for the folks at Southern and Boyce College who put on a really good conference with a good balance of seriousness and fun (a lot like the old “Camp on the Rock”).
Pastor's Ponderings #52 7/2/11 As we prepare for worship tomorrow, here is another thought from Gene Edward Veith in Loving God With All Your Mind: Thinking as a Christian in the Postmodern World: “Bible studies, prayer groups, and Christian friendships can be spiritual anchors … To meet together with other Christians for Bible study and prayer is to tap enormous spiritual power … Praying with and for other Christians is also a vast spiritual resource.

In The Gospel Commission, Michael Horton speaks of one of the radical changes that salvation brings:
Pastor's Ponderings #46 6/17/11
Here’s another thought from John Piper:
“What does it mean to love God ‘with all your mind’? I take it to mean that we direct our thinking in a certain way; namely our thinking should be wholly engaged to do all it can to awaken and express the heartfelt fullness of treasuring God above all things” [emphasis in original].

Let’s return to John Piper’s book Think. Here is a good excerpt:

Pastors' Ponderings #43 6/10/11
Is your heart at peace? Or is it cluttered with chaos? Do you worry a lot? Or are you at rest, knowing your loving and sovereign God is in control? Listen to Isaiah 26:3:
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (emphasis mine).
Pastors' Ponderings #42 6/7/11
As I’m reading through the Bible this year, I have a great companion book to assist me in my understanding. It is For the Love of God: A Daily Companion for Discovering the Riches of God’s Word by D. A. Carson. Each daily reading is very brief and to the point and extremely helpful in providing understanding of the Scriptural passage being read. Commenting on Psalm 75, Carson writes this:
Pastor's Ponderings #41 6/6/11
Today's pondering comes from our friend and brother John Kommeth. I had to pass it on for everyone to read, as it fits right into our current sermon series on the ascension of Jesus. It originally came from the ministry of Ravi Zacharias.
Thanks, John!

After your message Sunday, I had to share the thoughts below:

Pastors' Ponderings #40 6/2/11
Do you have trouble pondering things? Is meditation on the deep things of God not one of your most favorite activities? If so, Jason Stellman, in his article “Googling Ourselves to Death” (Tabletalk, April 2011), suggests that the Internet, and all the distractions that come with it, may be the reason. Consider this:

Today we continue with an excerpt from our “Book of the Month,” Think by John Piper:
Pastors' Ponderings #39 5/28/11
As part of our preparation for worship tomorrow, let’s meditate on Isaiah 12:1-6:
You will say in that day:
“I will give thanks to you, O Lord,
for though you were angry with me,
your anger turned away,
that you might comfort me.
“Behold, God is my salvation;

I love the church. I love my local church family. I love thinking about the church. I invite you to think about the church with me today, using these words by Michael Horton as a springboard (from The Gospel Commission: Recovering God’s Strategy for Making Disciples):
Pastors' Ponderings #37 5/26/11
Here’s one to get us ready for worship on Sunday. This is by R. C. Sproul, Jr., and he is contrasting what we need to be doing as believers today to the errant thinking that resulted in the Crusades that took place in the Middle Ages:
Pastors' Ponderings #36 5/25/11
We will wrap up our current train of thought today, once again using the words of Kevin DeYoung in this month’s Tabletalk magazine:

We continue our pondering of Kevin DeYoung’s words regarding our “personal relationship with Jesus.”
Pastors' Ponderings #34 5/23/11

Here’s some food for thought from Owen Strachan, in his chapter on “Sanctification” in the book Don’t Call It a Comeback: The Old Faith for a New Day. In this chapter, he provides us with some exhortations to keep in mind as we pursue holiness. One of those exhortations is to “be aware of some of the major sins of this age and fight them specifically.” And one of those “major sins” is “love of self.” Ponder this:

Pastor’s Pondering #31 5/14/11
As we prepare for corporate worship tomorrow, here are some thoughts regarding the Lord’s Supper, a very vital part of our Lord’s Day together. In volume one of For the Love of God, D. A. Carson writes:
Pastor’s Pondering #30 5/13/11
Here’s more from Piper in Think:
“There comes a point when we choose to be intentional about our thinking, so that we grow in what we see and understand. If we don’t choose to think harder, we will settle for an adolescent level of understanding the rest of our lives.

Today I am thanking God for our corporate worship on Easter Sunday yesterday. I am thanking God for my church family and the joy of celebrating the glorious resurrection of Jesus with you. I am also pondering Psalm 150, and as I read it, I am thanking God for the skilled musicians in our body.

Fletcher Matandika in has article in this month’s issue of Modern Reformation magazine entitled “Contending for the Faith in America: An Open Letter to North American Churches.” This will be the first of four or five encouragements to the people of God on our continent, where Biblical Christianity has, to a great extent, become shallow, subjective, and sentimental.

I’m reading a great book by John Piper entitled Think. You could call it a “powerful pondering promoter” in addition to being a great motivator to read more. Below are a couple of excerpts. First, Piper quotes Thomas Goodwin:
Pastor’s Ponderings #6 4/4/11
Today’s pondering comes from an article by Nicholas Batzig in this month’s issue of Tabletalk. Some of you may have seen this in his article about the perfection of Jesus entitled “A Sinless Life.” Ponder with me:
When we long to know Christ in a deeper and more intimate way, it is good for us to meditate on Scripture’s teaching concerning His representative perfection.”
Pastor’s Ponderings #5 4/1/11
The purpose of today’s pondering is to help prepare us for worship together this Sunday:

I will bow down toward your holy temple
in the fear of you.

Let’s stay with John Piper for another day. Here is something he said at the Ligonier Conference that I am still chewing on. I even challenged the youth with it tonight at our Solid Rock meeting. Here is my paraphrase:
Pastor’s Ponderings #2 3/29/11 My mind is still on the Ligonier Conference, where I would have to say, at least for me, the messages of Dr. John Piper were the highlight. Here is a “train of thought” from one of his messages: “There is a great & holy God who means to be known and treasured by His people …The value of God’s glory is reflected back to Him in the degree to which we treasure it … God doesn’t get any honor when we find His revealed glory boring.” Pondering with you, Pastor Butch
Pastor’s Ponderings 3/28/11
As always, Amy and I were encouraged and challenged by the great preachers at the 2011 National Ligonier Conference. Here are some thoughts for you to ponder with me from Dr. Steven Lawson’s sermon entitled “Worshipping the Triune God” from the fourth chapter of Revelation:
Dear Church Family, Over the years, I have often heard a sermon or read something in a book or article that I wished I could immediately share with you for you to ponder with me. Sometimes I remember to include it in a sermon; more times than not, I forget about it. As a result of my desire to get us to think about the things of God together, I am sending you the first installment of "Pastor's Ponderings" which is attached to this e-mail. Whether or not this will be a daily thing, time will tell. I'm pretty sure it won't be, but I can foresee it being fairly regular.
